Cantoro’s Italian Market & Trattoria has had its television close-up.

Now it’s a matter of waiting to see when a segment filmed for the Travel Channel’s “Food Paradise” will air.

Cantoro’s, located at 15550 N. Haggerty in Plymouth Township, caught the eye of the Travel Channel after photos of the restaurant and executive chef Anthony Calabrese’s kitchen creations were shared on social media, including Instagram.

A channel representative called Alex Bazzy, Cantoro’s general manager, and arranged to film Calabrese at work. It made Cantoro’s the only Michigan location — among a handful of Italian restaurants nationwide — for this particular segment.

“It’s quite an honor,” Bazzy said.

Filming began about 11 a.m. Thursday and finished about 10 p.m.

“It was a long day to shoot 5½ minutes of video,” Bazzy said.

The film crew shot video of Calabrese cooking in a downstairs prep kitchen, away from the public eye. Just what he prepared is being kept secret until the show airs, Bazzy said.

Cantoro’s chose select guests to sit in an area and sample Calabrese’s food as the film crew shot video. Otherwise, Bazzy said, it was business as usual as other customers dined inside the restaurant.

As word spread that Cantoro’s was in the television spotlight, customers showed up in large numbers.

“It created quite a storm,” Bazzy said.
